About Us

We are a fairly traditional WI founded in 1921.   30 – 40 members, mostly retirees.    Afternoon meeting in village hall with an informal atmosphere.  We integrate with village life, although some members come from neighbouring villages.

What we do

Our monthly meetings usually begin with singing Jerusalem, with a member playing the piano followed by giving out birthday posies.    After short WI business meeting, of record of last meeting, and information received from WI County and National, there is generally a talk by a local person, or from the WI speakers’ list.  After the speaker tea and cakes are served and a chance for a chat.  Raffle.   Competition – with members voting for winner with pennies which accumulate for donating to ACWW.    August meeting is hopefully in a garden, if fine, for tea, quiz, ‘bring and buy’ and chat.   October is the harvest lunch with profit from the lunch donated to ACWW.  December meeting is a Christmas tea, quiz, secret santa.

We award a bursary of £350 every two years for member to choose a course at Denman College.

Occasional outings to a local garden or historic house;   garden centres and afternoon tea; greyhound racing night with supper.

Once a month some members meet for a book group; there is also a craft afternoon in a members’ house once a month, making Christmas cards or items to sell.

Wadhurst WI is part of the High Weald group of WIs who meet twice a year for lunch in the Spring, and a carol service in December.

As well as fundraising each month with a raffle, there is a bring and buy stall 4 times a year.   Occasional fundraising events in Wadhurst Commemoration Hall, at the moment raising money for the centenary of Wadhurst WI in 2021.
